Actual versus volumetric weight
Actual weight is the gross scale weight of the packed shipment. Volumetric weight converts the space occupied into a planning weight so low-density cargo pays for aircraft or courier capacity.
Measure the outside of finished cartons, including bulges and protective packing. Supplier product dimensions are not a reliable substitute for shipping-carton measurements.
Divisors and carrier rules
A divisor of 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram is a common air-freight planning comparison, while some express services use 5,000. The selected carrier's current rule controls the booking.
Per-piece rounding, shipment minimums, oversize limits and dimensional scans can change the billed result. Use the calculator to prepare a request, not to predict a final invoice.
Reduce cost without weakening packaging
Remove avoidable empty space where product protection allows, then recalculate every carton. A small reduction repeated across many cartons can lower volumetric weight.
Do not compress, overfill or weaken cartons only to reduce weight. Damage, repacking, carrier refusal and warehouse rejection can exceed the freight saving.

What is the air-freight volumetric formula?
Multiply length, width and height in centimeters, multiply by carton count, then divide by the applicable carrier divisor. Compare the result with actual gross weight.
Why does the calculator show more weight than the scale?
The shipment occupies more space relative to its mass, so volumetric weight is higher and becomes the planning basis.
Should every carton have the same dimensions?
No. For mixed cartons, calculate each carton type separately and add the volumetric weights for a more accurate comparison.
Does the result include a freight rate?
No. It only estimates the weight basis. Route, dates, capacity, commodity, security, origin and destination services determine a quotation.
